My research spans multiple disciplines. I use both theory and experiment to solve scientific problems and develop new technologies.
Current efforts are focused on developing molecular control elements for dynamic chemical systems and adaptive materials. Chemical-based control elements, such as molecular switches and responsive chemical transformations, have applications ranging from the microscopic scale (chemical sensing, catalysis, biological probes), to the macroscopic scale (smart materials, soft robotics, programmable membranes). Specific focus is put towards designing fundamentally new mechanisms to control chemistry at the molecular scale, and to applying these control elements in adaptive materials, soft robotics, and organic electrochemical transistors.
